November 14 & 15 - Moose Hide Rattle
November 14 & 15 - Moose Hide Rattle
Thursday 6-8pm
Friday 6-8pm
Instructor - Carman McKay
This two day class will guide you through the creation of your own moose hide rattle in the style of a lineage passed down to your instructor from his elder. You will create the unique contemporary instrument using moose hide, a stick/dowel, and sinew. Some naturally dyed hide will be available as well as natural hue (Indigo, Tumeric, Beet, and Walnut). Recycled furs and leathers will be available for embellishments. Participants are encouraged to bring pebbles/semi precious stones/beads for stuffing the rattle - although some pebbles and beads will be provided. Objects must be no larger than 5 mm to go in your rattle. Personalized handles are also welcome - no bigger than a small deer antler for diameter. Stories and teachings are embedded in the class. Please note this is a two day commitment and can be combined with two day drum class for a rawhide weekend!
INSTRUCTOR: Carman McKay, Salish Artist, Educator and Lifeskills facilitator. Investment: 85$
PROJECT: With wood, artificial sinew and moose hide provided, students will construct a rattle in the shape of their choosing using threading, tying, and cutting techniques. Dexterity is required for use of a glover needle and hammering holes through hide, pulling sinew and tying around a stick. Rattles will be left to dry overnight and completed the following day. All knots will be demonstrated and no special skill is required.
DISCUSSION: Indigenous teachings and songs, the medicine wheel, lineage, as well as stories. Carman will be drumming and singing of public songs throughout the class. An upright board will be used to describe teachings throughout class. Note taking and voice recording is encouraged (no video recording please).
INCLUDED: All materials included. Participants are asked to bring a small hammer to class. If a personalized handle or items to stuff the rattle are wanted, please ensure items are no more than 5 mm in size (gravel/small pebble/semi precious beads). Diameter of handles if brought from home must be no bigger than a small deer horn.
PREREQUISITE: None! This is a beginner class, no experience necessary. However, this will require dexterity and some strength. Help is available throughout the class if needed.
PLEASE BRING: curiosity and personalized items. You are encouraged to bring a pencil/paper/personal device for your own note taking to foster your personal interconnection to the process of your creation.
