PROJECT: Over two classes, students will rug hook with a punch needle on a 16 x 20” frame with stretched backing fabric. The working area will be approximately 14 x 18”, and that will be the size of your cushion. Patterns will be provided or you can bring your own, just make sure it fits the working area of 14 x 18”. The first class will be spent getting to know the tools and techniques, second class spent punching and learning history, and the third class finishing your project and sewing it into a cushion with a prepared zippered backing. Some home work, approx 5-8 hours, will be required of students to complete the project. All materials are provided for the duration of the class. Supplies can be purchased after class if wanted, punch needles ($48) and backing ($42/m), wool ($9).

DISCUSSION: How to thread the Oxford Punch Needle, punching techniques and tips, transferring patterns onto backing and finishing techniques, differences between hooking with a punch needle and a traditional rug hook. History of the punch needle in Canadian context.

PREREQUISITE: None! Rug hooking is super easy, fast and no experience is necessary.

NOTE: Class size limited to 8 people. All materials provided. Some homework is required, approximately 5-8 hours between classes.
