October 26 & 27 - Willow Basket Weaving

This two day class will guide you through making a round market basket. We will be using willow harvested from rural Alberta ditches making this a great addition to your skill set of local and sustainable practices. Use this knowledge to explore the endless possibilities of basket weaving.
INSTRUCTOR: Maryann of Good Note Community Farm, $190
PROJECT: With willow provided students will weave a round basket approximately 14 x 14” with optional handle. The basket will be woven with a 3 x 3 slath base, the side weaves include waling, pairing, randing and slewing. You will finish your basket with a rod border technique as well as the option to fasten a wrapped core handle using the fishbone method.
DISCUSSION: Location and varieties of willow, as well as harvesting, storing and preparing . In your project 3 types of weaving will be used, we will also cover varieties of weaves suitable for other projects. Specific basketry vocabulary will also be discussed.
INCLUDED: All materials included. PLEASE BRING A KNIFE (paring knives work great) AND PRUNING SHEARS.
PREREQUISITE: None! This is a beginner class, no experience necessary. However, this will stretch your hands and brain's capacity if this is your first encounter. Basketry is meditative and soothing once the techniques become rote, but some effort is required to achieve that. Many breaks will be offered for time to absorb.
PLEASE BRING: Sharp knife and pruning shears. Waste free potluck snack and or bag lunch each day.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Due to very small class sizes, we are unable to offer refunds on workshops. If for any reason you are unable to attend, you can send someone in your place. Any classes cancelled by us due to low registration or health mandates will have the option for a refund or transfer to future date.
